Say Funky!!

I love New York’s pigeons. There’s a swagger to the way they walk and their funky attitude is like, “I want your food, trash and gimme that cash too...dig it, we funky!!” -Here are a couple of drawings in the works. clic pic to link slideshow, Have a funky day, dig it.

Mega Deck at the Paramount Center

Recently I was asked by Geoff Feder and Tim Smith to be in a group show at the Paramount Center. I thought it'll be a great chance to show some new experimentation with action paintings on a few boards and a painting of Lex, Polar Cap'd. Big ups to some cool art and amongst the many talents was a board made by our friend Mike Ming from the Skate NYC days. Click pic to link slide show and go check it out.

Ollie for Love, Ollie for Peace...

In the midst of war and on the brim of social uncertainty, I was blown away by this picture of a girl performing a care-free ollie at Afghanistan's first indoor skate park. There is one GOD that universally unites us all, that is the God of Skateboarding. Ollie be praised!!. Thanks to Jessica Cruz for the lead to this amazing foto.

RIP Andy Kessler

Thinking back to the days in the early 90s when Puppet Head used to drive Jeremy Henderson, Peter Huynh, Andy Kessler and myself to the New Berg skatepark in upstate New York. The drive from Manhattan was always filled with life lessons and tons of laughter. I remember one day when we were stuck in traffic on the upper west side; we were so eager to get out of the city that Puppet Head jumped the curb and drove up the sidewalk for an entire city block just to get past traffic and on to the west side highway. Once we made it up to New Berg we skated for hours upon hours and the sessions were some of those that stand out the most in my 23 years of skateboarding memories. To us Andy was a rock, tough as nails.

I guess that cliché is true that death is a part of life and as you get older the frequency of people you know passing increases. Regardless, each loved one gone has an impact and shock value when it happens. The news of Andy passing was shocking to say the least because I think of him as someone that has turned his life around and has been on the right path for so long, in amazing physical shape and skated every single day.

Andy was a huge part of so many movements in New York City skateboarding, in the 70s being an original member of the Zoo York Crew that skated in Riverside Park. He was also responsible for building so many of the skateparks in New York. These were just a few of Andy's contributions to the skateboarding scene here. His Wounded Knee style and slash grinds will be forever missed but not forgotten. He was a Grandmaster of New York City skateboarding.

Thank you Andy for making New York City skateboarding what it is today.

Epicly Later'd photographic remembrance

Andy Kessler, a tribute to our friend

Sincere condolences to Andy’s family and friends.

On Monday, August 10th, New york skateboarding culture and friends alike remembers Andy Kessler. A pioneer of New York skateboarding and member of the original ‘Zoo York’ skate crew. His sudden passing is a shock to many especially to friends Puppet Head, Jeremy Henderson and Papo, to name a few and those who were lucky enough to have had the pleasure of skating with him and learning the amazing history of ny skateboarding through his eyes.

Andy Kessler was as a small-framed, sarcastic radicalist with a heart that’s bright and nurturing as shimmering grease to jet-back hair. His love for skateboarding was immeasurable and his care of friends; like an unwashed skintight pair of Levi’s to ye ol gonads. To a younger skater like myself growing up in New York and being accepted into the circle of Kessler and crew was an honor of shredage and belonging. A feeling that pushes you to skate harder and to learn more, but most importantly, a feeling of belonging to skateboarding’s greater good.

Let us remember Andy Kessler for his contribution and love. We will miss him dearly. Click on Andy’s pic to view the Grandmaster of 108 documentary.
