Kesang Lamdark “Son of Rimpoche”

Hoods To Woods Mini Ramp Project

On a sunny Saturday morning of May 7th, we all got together at 11th/A to help the dynamic duo Trevor Andrew and Santo Gold build a mini ramp for Hoods To Woods. The HTW Foundation is an organization that promotes awareness of the outdoors to inner city children ages 13-19 through year round activities. Many of our friends showed up to pitch in. Daniel Pensyl came with the ramp plans and New York’s own Loki represented his bang-work. Click on pic to view album. When I think of skateboarding in the late 80’s, I could not forget my first shop sponsor Skate-NYC. Skate-NYC was founded by Steve Schwartz and Tom Agawa. If I remember correctly, Kenny Usamanont was the first sponsored rider for the shop then came me, then came Jeff Pang, then Harold Hunter joined the team. It was a great lineup of what became my extended family of friends; full of laughter and exploring the raw city discovering new skate spots. Bin Laden is Dead: Justice and Dignity Prevails

Here’s the Puma After Hours Athlete Recap: The Puma Social pool tournament was a success. Shedding light on down-low New York locals who frequent pool pubs to compete for the title of Best New York After Hours Athlete. Team UXA’s Peter Bici and KillaLooks partnered up and beat team Staple to advance to the next round. After waiting over 2 hrs til next match, the ad giant Ogilvy proved to be a little too much for the fly-guys. Overall, it was a good setting to meet new friends. I know some or many of you want to help and I thought it would be a good idea to list a few organizations that do their best in aiding victims of devastating natural disasters. From what I know, transportation overall is very limited; therefore, sending food, clothing or necessities will have a low chance of reaching its destination and is not recommended. An effective and most practical way is to donate. Here are a few organizations to consider (in no particular order): Red Cross, International Rescue Committee, AmeriCares, Oxfam America, World Vision, and last but not least, Catholic Relief Services. This year, there were many hopefuls and favorites like Zered Bassett, Shane O'Neill, Paul Rodriguez, Sheckler, T-Puds and others that many predict would win Tampa Pro 2011. Well you’re dead wrong, take all that and flip-it! This year we congratulate Dennis Busenitz for one of the best runs I; in turn, we’ve ever seen. The flow, style and simple selection of tricks made his run flawless. Thanks to founder Brian Shafer, Rob, Ryan and the TP-11 crew for making this event possible for everyone to enjoy. First time ever came here we drove across country in a Lincoln Continental from San Francisco. We stopped briefly in Los Angeles and then drove across country on one of the most epic adventures in my skateboarding experience. I probably collectively been to the events you're more than just about anybody to suffer the phone and founder Brian Shafer. Probably the best thing in San Diego County is a bar owned by legendary skateboarder Matt Hensley. Every time I'm there I bump into someone that I have met in my 25 years of skateboarding. A pleasant surprise last night in between drinking pickle backs (shots of Jamison, chased by pickle juice?), was the bellowing of my name from across the bar from Fred Gall. I first met Freddy when he was about nine years old in Suffern New York at a Shut demo way back in the day (1990?). Since then he's had quite an interesting career, and still is on a tear and one of my favorites from the East Coast. Kenny is also a super stylish powerhouse with mad pop.

Good seeing you guys and looking forward to spending the next couple of days with you at the crossroads tradeshow at blackbox.

We Built This City!, UXA's Spring 2011 Capsule

Of course we didn’t physically built this city, but the founders of UXA have been building the NYC skateboarding scene since the 1980s. Two of which were professional skateboarders for Zoo York (Jefferson Pang, Peter Bici), and the third is one of the most influential graphic designers in the industry (Peter Huynh). This trio continues to skate and is still a huge part the skateboard industry.

Paul Rodriguez 4 Release Party

Last night was Paul Rodriguez’s 4th shoe release party. *Break* And now to the shoe: The PR4’s were decent, Lo/Hi, it’s simply colored and detailed with an uneven outer toe guard panel which remind me of some retro gym/court shoe, which I thought was a good idea for flexibility. The swoosh branding worked well on the Hi’s, but felt it was missing something, hmm maybe the Skate-Man symbol perhaps?... Finally, I also got a chance to meet Paul and thought he was cool. All n all, it was a good night, the Supreme heads were holdin' it down with their team captain Charles Lamb and founder James Jebbia. Many might not know this, but, Jeff Pang had many nicknames. Pictured above is an ollie japan nailed during his pre-Freddy Kruger period, and appropriately coined Japang. No sweat but must say it was one of the best Japans' back then... I mean, c’mon -look at them rails' inset, though not sure why they’re so far in!!? All for Skate & Skate for All, Hail UXA.

Welcome to the Jungle

Its obvious that UXA has a history of New York City skateboarding but check out this blast from the past at the infamous Jungle Ramp on Staten Island shot by our close friend Irene Ching. Irene is NYC's most famous roller skater and she was one of the only people we knew that had a car back in the 80s. She used to drive us to skateparks all across the Northeast. From skating giant vert ramps with the Twins in Union City New Jersey, to good old Dr. Buck's on Long Island, Irene exposed us to the world of transition skating because that was her passion.

It's crazy that both Peter and I moved to Staten Island 20+ years later but our passion back then was fueled by the quest to skate something unknown very similar to the folktale in the classic video "The Search for Animal Chin". When we didn't have a vehicle we would ride the Staten Island ferry and a bus to the golf course where this what seemed to be gigantic structure was hidden in the woods 20 yards off of the fairway. In actuality the ramp was 16 feet wide and may be 9 feet high, barely getting to vert. The flatbottom was about 10 feet at the most, the steel so smooth and fast, it was like nothing we had ever ridden. But the steel was also unforgiving when you slammed and we probably have some calcium deposits in our hips from the memorable Jungle Ramp.

I love that Peter pays homage to the inventor of the McTwist Mr. Mike McGill wearing that awesome flyaway helmet.

Light Fire, Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics

Aside from all the hype of high frequency, 6-layer top-secret body suit technology by Descente, Speedo, etc, I am really looking forward to the XXI Vancouver winter olympics’ halfpipe competition. The motto for me this time ’round is ‘Go Double-Cork or Go Home!!’, and the US surely Double-Cork’d themselves with the illest lineup minus Kevin Pearce (injured by double cork-ofcourse). Also, this year’s attire was designed by Burton which retros back to the ‘Americana-Woodstock’d’ distressed patchwork denim paired with some plaid jacket; lo-tek and just plain shred!!. although I was disappoint to not see an official board for the team. Here’s an idea inspired by this years’ XXI V-WO Games. ***RIP Nodar Kumaritashvili, may your family and country find peace. All Hail. UXA.

Wu-Pang Clan has relocated to the WC

Hello all my friends out there!

Yes it is true the Wu-Pang Clan has relocated to the WC. The last time I lived in CA was SF back in 1994. I spent 11 months here and it rained for 2 months straight. I have to say that SF is probably my favorite cities on the west coast. But at that time in my life it just wasn’t for me.

Now here we are 16 years later living in what I though was sunny CA, but sure enough 2 days after we got here it rained for the 1st time in 165 days and this last week there has been record rainfall.

I’m hoping to start skating more while out here as there is a huge ramp that just got built at DC and the contruction of the Street section is starting next week.

Yes there is going to be footage of Kingsley skating at the Berrics really soon but I have been slacking bigtime on updating blogs. So for now check out the Wu-Pang Clan’s BGP’s on Chaz Ortiz’s First Try Fridays on The Berrics .

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Day

Today we celebrate one the most important figures in American history. The youngest man to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a leader of the Civil Rights movement; he planned the drives in Alabama for the registration of Negroes as voters. MLK’s peaceful march on Washington, D.C. of 250,000 of whom he delivered his address “I Have A Dream” which helped named him Man of the Year by Time magazine 1963. It is our honor to salute him for his conquest to unite the people of America and in doing so, breaking the color barrier. All Hail MLK!!
